The soonest: Week 6 vs. New York Jets
The LA Chargers have a tough four-week stretch upcoming. The team has to play the defending Super Bowl Champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, this Sunday and then after a game against the Carolina Panthers they get to travel and play both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints on the road.
That is easily the toughest four-game stretch for the team this season, even if they do get a little bit of a break with the Panthers in-between. Throwing Herbert out there in these games should not happen. I know that some people believe that if you have talent it does not matter, but it can hurt a quarterbacks morale and entire season if they get punched in the mouth in their first few starts.
Thus, the absolute soonest I could see Herbert taking the starting job over is Week 6 and it is quite easy to predict. I do think if the Chargers win against the Panthers and play the Saints and Bucs close that Taylor will hold onto the job for the time being.
However, if the team gets blown out and even drops the game against the Panthers then Taylor will be in deep trouble. That will move the Chargers to 1-4 on the season, prompting a quarterback change.
Herbert then gets a soft part of the schedule where he gets to start his NFL career against the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars before jumping into division play.
While that makes sense on paper, I do not think it is the most likely starting point.
