Reasons for the LA Chargers acquiring Earl Thomas:
1. He has ties to defensive coordinator Gus Bradley
Gus Bradley was the defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks during the Legion of Boom days and that creates a natural connection between the Bolts and Thomas. The Chargers run a similar scheme to what the Seahawks ran back in the early-to-mid 2010s and Thomas would be very familiar with what would be asked of him.
2. He could be a really cheap asset to attain
This entire fiasco for Earl Thomas has not only driven him out of Baltimore, but it has lowered his leverage. The Chargers are one of the few teams with some remaining cap space and could absolutely afford to bring Thomas in — if he is cut.
Thomas is not going to get a big contract and the Chargers could capitalize on that by utilizing the rest of their cap space and signing him to a high-salary, one-year deal. That is something that fits the team’s current plan without restricitng the future.
3. He is still a solid safety and would create a dynamic duo in LA
The idea of Derwin James and Earl Thomas lining up next to each other is a great one. Thomas might not be prime Thomas but he was still very solid last season and was a Pro Bowler. He is versatile, which fits into the Chargers’ scheme, and would make an already great secondary truly elite.
This would be a case of strengthening the areas that you are already strong in, which as we have seen before, can create epic results.
