Where does LA Chargers running back Austin Ekeler rank among the top pass-catching running backs?

Austin Ekeler is the new RB1 for the LA Chargers after signing a four-year extension this offseason and with Melvin Gordon signing with the Denver Broncos. This could not have come at a better time for the Bolts, as Ekeler is coming off a truly great season.

We still have not seen Ekeler as the legitimate every-down running back that leads the team in total carries but we know that he is always going to be an elite threat in the passing game. He undoubtedly is one of the five best pass-catching running backs in the league.

But where exactly does Ekeler rank? To figure that out, we decided to break down the five best pass-catching running backs in the NFL heading into 2020.

5. Tarik Cohen, Chicago Bears

Tarik Cohen has had a similar role as Austin Ekeler with the Chicago Bears. Cohen has been a dangerous threat in the Bears’ offense the last three seasons but is not called on much to carry the football.

Ekeler does carry the ball more than Cohen (even with Melvin Gordon on the roster) and Cohen has not had a season that compares to Ekeler’s 2019. Timing is everything, however, as Cohen has something that Ekeler does not: Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors.

He earned both honors in 2018 when he caught 71 passes for 725 yards and five touchdowns. Since 2017, Cohen has a combined 203 receptions for 1,534 yards and nine touchdowns.

He ranks fifth in receiving yards, fifth in receiving touchdowns and fourth in total receptions over the last two seasons.
