Largest salaries in LA Chargers’ history: 4. Vincent Jackson

  • 2011 salary: $11.4 million
  • 2020 salary: $18.8 million

This was not an agreed to contract between the Chargers and star receiver Vincent Jackson. Instead, this is a case of the Chargers slapping the franchise tag on their best receiver, who wound up taking a big contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the following season.

However, that franchise tag still paid Vincent Jackson a pretty penny, as he made $11.4 million in 2011. This franchise tag figure made Jackson the third-highest paid wide receiver at the time, trailing just Larry Fitzgerald and Calvin Johnson.

(Side note: isn’t it incredible that Larry Fitzgerald is still playing in the NFL? He is the only receiver in the top-10 in terms of 2011 salary to still be in the NFL.)

When compared today, Jackson would still be right up there in terms of salary. His adjusted salary cap hit for the 2020 season is $18.8 million, which would have made him the second-highest paid receiver in the league today behind Julio Jones.

It is important to note that the franchise tag for a wide receiver is not this high, though. The franchise tag for a receiver is worth $17.8 million in 2020, which still would have made him the fourth-highest paid receiver in the league.
