Second LA Chargers offensive question: Who is going to be the primary backup running back?
The LA Chargers have three guys in the running back room in 2020 that are going to produce in 2020. Austin Ekeler, who received an extension this offseason, is now the number one back in LA with Melvin Gordon signing with Denver.
We know that Ekeler is going to be the number one back but what is still unclear is how the team is going to manage the two running backs behind Ekeler. We know that Anthony Lynn will throw several different looks out there and each running back will play a role, but there will be one that takes over as the primary second running back.
The reason why this question is important is that the primary backup running back is probably going to get a decent number of carries. Ekeler is great, but he is more of a threat in the passing game and thrives when he has someone else who can take some of the carries off his plate.
So, who do the Chargers turn to? They drafted a workhorse in Joshua Kelley who could absolutely handle the workload but they also have the really exciting Justin Jackson, who has already had NFL snaps.
However, Jackson struggles to stay healthy and really has not done that much outside of that Steelers game in 2018 to outright deserve the job.
