LA Chargers composite big board: 3. Isaiah Simmons, LB, Clemson
- Total points: 26
Isaiah Simmons is a draft prospect that many Charger fans are salivating over. If there is a surefire Pro Bowl talent in the NFL Draft, then it is Isaiah Simmons. Like Derwin James, he is someone who we know will be great right away and will undoubtedly become a Pro Bowler.
The question is not if he is talented, but instead if he is a fit on the Chargers. Alex Insdorf thinks so, as he ranked Simmons first in his big board. I have Simmons second and he appeared in all six of the big boards.
What makes Simmons so exciting, outside of him being an instant jolt to the worst part of the defense, the linebacker unit, is his versatility. Like James, Simmons is a Swiss Army Knife on the defensive side of the ball and can really line up anywhere.
He can rush the passer, can play zone coverage in the middle as the strongside linebacker and could even line up at slot corner if the team absolutely needed him to. The Chargers would have two of the most unique and talented defensive players on the same defense, which would create an absolute headache to scheme against.
Simmons is freakishly athletic. He is the perfect figurehead for the modern NFL linebacker that has the size and can hit hard but also has the speed of a cornerback. He is undoubtedly going to be a multi-time Pro Bowler in his career.
