Round 7, Pick 220: OT Calvin Throckmorton, Oregon

Even with the acquisition of Bryan Bulaga and the hope for growth in Trey Pipkins, the Chargers need to bring in some more bodies to compete for depth. Behind them, there isn’t too much in the cupboard.

As I mentioned earlier, I see the team bringing in a veteran as a stop-gap option. If injuries were to creep up on the Chargers as they have in the past, I’ll be holding my breath every snap Trent Scott and Sam Tevi play. Long story short, they aren’t the answer for this team.

They are liabilities and their struggles in pass-protection are part of the reason Philip Rivers took a step back last season.

Bringing in a player like Throckmorton wouldn’t be a bad pick at this point. He is probably best suited to be in a West Coast scheme. His versatility and football IQ allow him to play at any spot in the front five. He isn’t a high ceiling player, but I feel that it’s definitely worth a shot to see if he can further develop.

I could also see the team going ahead and taking a running back here such as Patrick Talor Jr. from Memphis or TCU’s Sewo Olonilua. They may opt to take yet another linebacker here, such as Shaquille Quarterman from Miami FL.

Breaking down the non-QB options at six. Next

All in all, the Chargers already had one of the more talented teams in the league coming into the Draft. With this mock, I filled some of the glaring needs while also providing more depth at positions where the team was already strong.
