The Chargers head into 2020 with the goal of retaining a handful of pending free agents. Who is most deserving of that contract extension?

The Chargers have a number of pending free agents on their roster, more so than they have in previous years. Some are big-name talents, but most are key rotational pieces on offense, defense, and special teams.

Who among them is most deserving of an extension?

On this list, an extension will mean anything that keeps the player around in 2020. So, something like a one-year deal, multi-year deal, or second-round tender will all be considered.

This looks at their entire career as a whole, rather than just their play in 2019, though this past year weighs the most heavily when considering who is the most deserving of returning next year.

Chargers who will be gone:

This portion of the list is for guys who will likely be heading out to new teams following this season.

Melvin Gordon

One could argue Gordon doesn’t belong on a guaranteed-to-be-gone list, and to that point, he’s certainly had a greater impact than any of the Chargers listed in this section.

But, he’s made it clear he won’t be returning. All signs indicate he’ll be gone in 2020.
