1992 Chargers

When you talk about improbable teams to make the playoffs, the 1992 Chargers are at the top of the list in NFL history. The fact that this team made the playoffs was shocking for multiple reasons.

In 1990 and 1991, the Chargers had a combined record of 10-22. So when they started 0-4 in 1992, it wasn’t much of a surprise. It seemed like it was just going to be more of the same.

But after defeating the Seattle Seahawks 17-6 in Week 5, the Chargers were finally in the win column. That started a four-game winning streak for the team. There was a hiccup following that against the Chiefs, but then the Chargers got really hot, winning their next seven games to close the season and finish 11-5.

It was truly shocking.

Once in the playoffs, the Chargers drew the Chiefs in the Wild Card round. The Chiefs had beaten the Chargers twice that regular season, but the Chargers blanked them 17-0 in the playoffs. The Dolphins were able to end the Chargers’ season the following week but the 1992 season was hardly seen as a bad one.

This was a big season for the Chargers and it was a year in which the team laid the groundwork for what would eventually lead it to the Super Bowl just two years later. The team grew the confidence and belief that it could hang with the big boys during that incredible winning streak in 1992.
