Detrez Newsome

With the drama surrounding Melvin Gordon, the Chargers have room for at least one running back, maybe even two, to step up and make the roster after Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson.

Newsome impressed in training camp last year, but this year he might be on an even playing ground with undrafted rookie Jeremy Cox and Troymaine Pope. Newsome likely still has the lead in that race, but that lead is dwindling.

He carried the ball five times for a minuscule 13 yards against the Cardinals. Pope carried the ball six times for 15 yards while Cox received just one carry.

Gordon is not going to play in the preseason and the team pretty much knows what it has in Ekeler and Jackson and there’s no real reason to give them extended work during the preseason and risk any kind of injury.

That said, Newsome should get a healthy dose of carries to see if he is able to make the team for the second year in a row. He could have his work cut out for him holding off the guys behind him.

Last year in the preseason against the Saints, Newsome had 44 yards of offense and scored a touchdown. That was a follow-up to the game against the Seattle Seahawks the previous week in which he carried the ball 19 times for 78 yards.

Those two performances were what landed him on the team, and he needs to start kicking it into gear this Sunday.
