What a boon it would be for the Chargers if Lamp could get on the field and be the player the team hoped it drafted in the second round back in 2017.
That wouldn’t be a surprise to everyone. NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah stated that he would be “shocked” if Lamp isn’t a starter this season. That’s interesting considering the fact that he has never come close to doing that in his two years with the team.
First, it was an injury that kept Lamp off the field and then it was, well whatever it was. Lamp was often part of the team’s inactive list on game days last season and when a player isn’t injured and they are a former second-round pick, that’s never a good sign.
Are the Chargers just biding their time with him or is there a deeper-rooted problem? The 2019 season will be one where Lamp must prove his worth. He’s not going to be able to sit on the sidelines in street clothes because if he has another season like that, it will likely be the end of his run in L.A.
That said, if he does crack the starting lineup and gives the Chargers the boost they always hoped he would bring, then the weak link in the team’s chain suddenly gets much stronger. That makes Lamp’s situation one of the most interesting to follow this summer as the team looks for answers to these pressing questions.
He has more to prove than perhaps anyone on this list.
