Last season, both the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs finished the season 12-4. But by virtue of a tiebreaker, the Chiefs won the AFC West division.

That gave the Chiefs a much more favorable path in the playoffs, which included home-field advantage. They were literally a terrible Dee Ford offsides penalty away from playing in the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs are going to be a trendy Super Bowl pick this coming season for a variety of reasons, starting with how close they got last season. They also have the reigning league MVP in Patrick Mahomes, who might have the strongest throwing arm the league has ever seen. The Chiefs have one of the most explosive offenses of the last decade and are always tough to defeat at home.

Both the Chiefs and Chargers will have to overcome the hump that is the New England Patriots, but the first goal will be to overtake each other.

Now, this isn’t to sell both the Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders short, but as things stand right now, all signs point to the Chiefs and Chargers going toe to toe in the AFC West. Just which team will win the division crown? You’ll likely see more people picking the Chiefs for the reasons listed above, but here are three reasons why the Chargers should be favored to win the division.
