December 29, 2013. That was the last time the Los Angeles Chargers were able to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs.

Many analysts have predicted that the Bolts will win the AFC West division this season, something they haven’t been able to do since 2009. For that to happen, they will absolutely have to find a way to overcome the Chiefs.

The Chiefs may be ripe for the picking as Alex Smith is no longer around and though Patrick Mahomes has promise, he’s still a little wet behind the ears. The Chargers will get the first crack at him in a game that matters this season as the two teams open the 2018 campaign against each other this Sunday at StubHub Center.

The Chargers will likely be favored, but diehard fans know that means nothing as the Chiefs have won eight straight over them. The last time the Chargers beat them, on that day in December nearly five years ago, they needed overtime to do it.

So how have the Chiefs gained such a stranglehold on this rivalry and how do they seem to hold such power over the Chargers when these teams meet, regardless of win-loss records?

Here, we will take a look back at the last eight matchups between these two teams to see if there’s a trend or two that the Chargers can figure a way to buck.
