I’ve made it no secret this offseason that this is a player I feel is a perfect fit for this team, but the chances are running out for Nelson Spruce. The performance put forth by Davis last week made it very difficult for him to make this team and the only way he’s going to do so now is with a breakout performance.
Against Arizona last week, Spruce was targeted just twice in the passing game, catching one pass for five yards. There is a lot of talent within the Chargers’ receiving corps and because of that, snaps are going to be limited.
Davis and Artavis Scott, at the very least, are ahead of Spruce on the depth chart along with the four wide receivers we assume will make the team in Keenan Allen, Tyrell Williams, Mike Williams and Travis Benjamin.
Those are long odds for the former Colorado Buffalo and Los Angeles Ram who needs to catch everything thrown his way and perhaps find the end zone in this game. He could also help the team as a punt returner, but that role was given to Scott and J.J. Jones last week.
Spruce will be lucky to see action on more than three or four series in this game so he needs to find a way to get open and get the quarterback to look his way with confidence.
