Real football is almost here! And yes, preseason football is real football. Every game matters.

Though we likely won’t see much of the starters for the Los Angeles Chargers in the preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals, there will be enough to whet your appetite in this game, so long as you are keen on following the build to a 53-man roster.

The Chargers and Cardinals meet later this season in Week 12 in November. That game will be quite a bit different than this one, as the quarterbacks on the field Saturday night will mostly be Geno Smith, Cardale Jones, Nick Shimonek, Mike Glennon and Chad Kanoff.

The Bolts should also get a close-up look at the Cardinals’ first-round pick, Josh Rosen. He’ll be familiar to many of the fans in Los Angeles as he starred at UCLA for years.

But it’s the first preseason game. Players are just trying to get back into the swing of things and coaches are hoping to see any positives that can carry over into the next week of practice and the following preseason game.

Naturally, there are some important position battles to keep tabs on during the game on Saturday night. Which player can get a leg up on his competition?

So what will you be tuning into this game for, other than to see the Chargers back on the field again? If you’re looking for extra incentive, here’s three position battles to follow, keeping in mind that it is the first preseason game.
