Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB, Alabama
Here’s a name you likely haven’t seen linked to the Chargers very often. Early mock drafts had him as a top 10 pick and some even had him in the top five. However, one of our writers feels he will land in L.A. and provides sound reasoning for that opinion.
Sebastian Orellana: “Projected first round pick: Minkah Fitzpatrick
Due to six projected quarterbacks going in the first round, I see Fitzpatrick falling to the 17th pick. A versatile playmaker with the right size and speed to play safety for a veteran Chargers secondary. Although the Chargers biggest concern is the run defense, they could not pass up an athlete like Minkhah Fitzpatrick”.
Good points. It would be surprising to see Fitzpatrick get down this far, but certainly not impossible. If it were to happen, as Sebastian notes, it’s a pick the Chargers couldn’t justify not making. Even Telesco, who has been chided for not placing more emphasis on the safety position, would have to pull the trigger on this guy.
Fitzpatrick can cover a lot of ground to make plays as a game-changing defensive back. During his college career with the Crimson Tide, he returned four of his nine interceptions for touchdowns.
