LaDainian Tomlinson: 2001, Round 1, pick No. 5, TCU

Other players considered: Leslie O’Neal (1986), Junior Seau (1990)

When discussing the best player in Chargers’ history, most arguments come to either LaDainian Tomlinson or Junior Seau. There really is no wrong answer, and if you want to argue that Seau was the best, I’m good with that.

Both Seau and Tomlinson are members of the Hall of Fame and both made a lasting mark on the organization before ending their careers elsewhere. I give the nod to Tomlinson because I feel he was just a tad better. Perhaps that was because of his 2006 season.

You can still make the argument that Tomlinson’s 2006 season is the greatest individual season in NFL history. That year, LT ran for 1,815 yards and 28 touchdowns while also gaining 508 yards receiving and scoring another three touchdowns. His 28 rushing touchdowns and 31 total combined touchdowns are both records to this day for a single season.

Seau had some tremendous season and is easily the best defensive player in team history, but for a two or three year stretch, I feel LT was the best overall player in football.

The Chargers obtained him with the fifth overall pick in 2001 after trading the No. 1 pick to the Atlanta Falcons, who then selected Michael Vick. The other three players selected before Tomlinson that year were Leonard Davis, Gerard Warren and Justin Smith. That worked out pretty well for the Bolts.

Now looking at rounds one through seven, here is your all-time Chargers draft team.

LaDainian Tomlinson, Fred Dean, Dan Fouts, Shaun Phillips, Rodney Harrison, Jeromey Clary and Marion Butts.
