Trade 2: Melvin Gordon/Desmond King to the Browns
Another one that needs some explaining.
Melvin Gordon had a disappointing rookie season and has not looked back. His combination of size, speed and explosiveness would greatly benefit a mediocre Cleveland Browns offense and his leadership ability would help boost the confidence of the young team.
Desmond King was one of the most impressive rookies this past year, racking up four sacks and taking an interception to the house. He was equally special as a kick returner, averaging 20.8 yards a return. With Jabrill Peppers, they can do some real damage to opposing defenses and create a menacing, hard-hitting secondary.
In return, Los Angeles would get the first pick in the draft, where they could easily address their needs in the first round alone. They could go for linebacker Roquan Smith or defensive tackle Da’Ron Payne… or both. They could even get their choice in drafting Phil’s predecessor, find a guy they could really develop rather than just take what they can get. Although they lose Gordon, they have endless possibilities to replace him, perhaps even pursuing Le’Veon Bell, should he become a free agent.
Is this a trade Chargers fans could live with? Taking Smith and Payne in the draft would give the team arguably the best defense in the league and as the old saying goes, defense wins championships.
