The Los Angeles Chargers aren’t letting one of their best defensive players go.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Chargers and defensive end Melvin Ingram have agreed to a four-year, $66 million deal with $42 million guaranteed.

The #Chargers signed pass-rusher Melvin Ingram to a 4-year, $66M deal, source said. Their franchise player. $42M in guarantees

The target for #Chargers LB Melvin Ingram was the $16.5M per year that Chandler Jones got. Right on the nose. Now he'll be at minicamp.

After a sluggish start to his career, Ingram, a 2012 first-round pick (No. 18 overall), stepped up his game over the past two seasons, finishing with 18.5 sacks, including double-digit sacks in 2015. Some question Ingram’s ability to transition to a 4-3 defense, but he does have the versatility to rush the passer standing up and play with his hand in the dirt. He should fit nicely as the Leo (pass-rushing DE) in Gus Bradley’s scheme.

The Chargers are a better team with Ingram, as he’s regarded as one of the best pass-rushers and overall defenders in the NFL (was Pro Football Focus’ sixth-ranked edge rusher last year). Ingram and 2016 Defensive Rookie of the Year Joey Bosa pair nicely together. Quite frankly, they could challenge as the best edge rushing duo in 2017.

With Ingram signed, the Chargers will now enjoy a drama-free training camp.
