The San Diego Chargers got their man signed last week, but don’t expect to see DE Joey Bosa on the field against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1.

According to San Diego Union-Tribune’s Michael Gehlken, Bosa, who has been dealing with tightness as of late, is unlikely to play.

It appears all but certain Joey Bosa will miss Week 1. Not practicing today. If he played Sunday, would be his first time in pads as Charger

This isn’t necessarily surprising. As much as we all want to see him play, it’s smart for the coaches to hold him out. It doesn’t appear to be a serious injury, but you don’t want to make things worse. Hopefully, Bosa will suit up for Week 2’s home opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

For now, 2015 sixth-rounder Darius Philon will be the starter–and that’s not a bad thing. Philon has proved his worth to the team. He’s a big guy with rare speed and solid pass-rushing skills. Playing next to nose tackle Brandon Mebane and defensive end Corey Liuget will help him, too. As long as he can hold his own in the run game, the Chargers will be fine. In the offseason, I said don’t sleep on Philon. It’s now his time to shine.

And when Bosa gets back on the field, him, Philon, Liuget and Mebane will form what could be a dangerous defensive line. Add in those linebackers, which is one of the Chargers’ strengths going into the season, and you have a front seven that will help turn this team around.

In other news, the Chargers only listed one player on their first injury report of the season.

Well, that’s nice to hear. As long as this team stays relatively healthy, they will have a chance.
