Recently, ESPN posted a list featuring 53-man roster projections for each team in the league, formed by its analysts.
Eric D. Williams, who covers the San Diego Chargers for ESPN, put together a look at how the team’s roster could shake out, which can be viewed here.
Here’s a breakdown of the players Williams sees on the final roster.
Quarterback: Philip Rivers, Kellen Clemens, Zach Mettenberger
Running Back: Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead, Branden Oliver, Derek Watt
Wide Receiver: Keenan Allen, Travis Benjamin, Stevie Johnson, Dontrelle Inman, Tyrell Williams
Tight End: Antonio Gates, Hunter Henry, Jeff Cumberland, Sean McGrath
Offensive Line: King Dunlap, Orlando Franklin, Matt Slauson, D.J. Fluker, Joe Barksdale, Chris Hairston, Kenny Wiggins, Trevor Robinson, Max Tuerk
Defensive Line: Joey Bosa, Brandon Mebane, Corey Luiget, Sean Lissemore, Darius Philon, Tenny Palepoi
Linebacker: Manti Te’o, Denzel Perryman, Melvin Ingram, Jeremiah Attaochu, Kyle Emanuel, Nick Dzubnar, Tourek Williams, Joshua Perry, Jatavis Brown
Defensive Back: Jason Verrett, Brandon Flowers, Casey Hayward, Craig Mager, Steve Williams, Jahleel Addae, Dwight Lowery, Adrian Phillips, Darrell Stuckey, Dexter McCoil
Specialists: Josh Lambo, Drew Kaser, Mike Windt
Anything catch you off guard there? There aren’t any huge surprises here, though ESPN’s Williams does have former CFL star Dexter McCoil on the final roster. He has undrafted rookies Adrian McDonald and Dom Williams off the team.
Personally, I like Williams as a sixth wide receiver and believe the team will only keep eight linebackers where Eric D. Williams has nine. I also feel Damion Square is a better option than Tenny Palepoi. I also like undrafted rookie Tyler Johnstone to make the team as an extra offensive lineman over Wiggins or Robinson.
Aside from that, this is a pretty good list. We’re getting closer and closer to training camp where we can see all the position battles unfold before our very eyes.
