The San Diego Chargers re-signed Joe Barksdale last night to a 4-year deal. Barksdale was one of the most consistent pieces on the Chargers offensive line last season and he has been rewarded for his play. He will take hold of the starting right tackle position with the Chargers and have that side locked down.

Most of the offensive line is set at this point. The biggest need at the moment will be in the middle of the line at center. Chris Watt is penciled in as the starter at this moment, but we need to find someone else to lock it down in the middle for this season.

DJ Fluker will get another season as the right guard. Orlando Franklin will get another season to prove that he is capable at left guard and King Dunlap will be the starting left tackle unless Laremy Tunsil slides his way down to the third overall selection. I can’t see that happening at this point since he is projected to be taken with the first overall selection by the Tennessee Titans.

What do the Chargers do at the center position? Alex Mack is the biggest name in free agency and signing him would be the biggest move that the Chargers could pull in free agency this year. Mack would be an instant upgrade to all the position on the offensive line. Having his veteran presence in the middle would give this team a boost in confidence. He would immediately make the running game better with his presence in the middle and Philip Rivers would get a little more time to find his targets down the field.

Mack is getting interest from a few teams in free agency, with the Atlanta Falcons making the most noise at the moment. The Chargers need to find their way into the conversation with Mack and make that happen.
