Melvin Gordon didn’t break loose in his first preseason game with the San Diego Chargers and some people are already freaking out about his performance. THIS IS PRESEASON FOLKS! Why are we tripping about his very first preseason game? Sure there were some nice performances from other backs around the league and other backs on the roster, but don’t write off the kid already.

Gordon ran the ball 6 times and had 11 yards in that game. The numbers don’t lie, but there wasn’t much room to work with in his first stint on the field.

Did anyone see his carries? It is quite possible that you missed out because of DirecTV and their sorry broadcast, but he didn’t have much room to work with in the game. His very first carry could have been sprung for a nice gain, but there was a blown assignment and Gordon had to avoid getting hit in the backfield.

There was one opportunity that he missed out on a huge gain. The right side was sealed and Gordon was outside and had to beat the safety but he couldn’t get it done and was down for a short gain. That is where we need Gordon to step up and show off his skills.

Gordon will get more opportunities and the game will slow down for him. He will make the plays that we saw him make in college. He will show off his ability to break off a huge game-changing play. He just needs a little bit of time to get comfortable.
