The San Diego Chargers signed Joe Barksdale in the offseason and that should have been an immediate sign that we were going to make a shift on the offensive line. Barksdale was a 16-game starter with the St. Louis Rams at right tackle last season.

While Barksdale was looking for a job in the offseason, he was looking for a opportunity that he could continue as a starting player. Barksdale wouldn’t have come to the Chargers if he didn’t think there would be an opportunity to become the starter at the position. Even the contract that Barksdale signed should have been a hint on what was to come.

Barksdale’s contract was all incentive based. If Barksdale wasn’t starting, then he wasn’t going to make any money. Barksdale had other options in free agency, but he saw this as the place that he could get a shot at the starting right tackle spot.

Did we know that he would be the starter when the team opened up the season? We shouldn’t have been surprised.
