Philip Rivers expected to exceed $20M per season on new contract

The San Diego Chargers and Philip Rivers are working back and forth looking to negotiate a long term contract. The latest report from Bleacher Report believes that Philip’s deal will be around $20 million per season. That will line him up with some of the other top flight quarterbacks in the league.

Aaron Rodgers leads the league with an average of $22 million per season. Russell Wilson just locked in a new contract that will average out to $21.9 million. Big Ben averages out at $21.85 million and Cam Newton makes a cool $20.8 million per season. Rivers will be looking to get paid with the rest of the top quarterbacks in the game. His current deal will pay him at $15.75 million for the 2015 season and it is time for a raise.

Philip doesn’t want the contract negotiations to linger into the season and would love to get something settled soon. If he is unable to get the deal locked in during training camp, Philip will likely play through the season on the final year of his contact and then negotiate again at the end of the season.

The team needs to find a way to lock in Philip Rivers for the rest of his career. He has carried this team on his back for the last several seasons and he has kept this team in the playoff hunt throughout his career. Without Rivers on the roster, the team would be starting over from scratch. I don’t think Tom Telesco could afford to start from the beginning. Pay the man.
