San Diego Chargers Mock Draft – The Marcus Mariota Effect

facebooktwitterreddit

We have seen it before, the NFL prospect who waits and waits on day one of the draft hoping to hear his named called in the first round, but doesn’t.  Or the guy who keeps slipping down.  Will it happen to Marcus Mariota this year?

Because of Mariota’s lack of experience playing in the pro-style offense it is believed that he may take some time to develop into a starting NFL quarterback.

There are some experts (I use the term loosely) that think Mariota may drop.  Will he drop because of his physical ability? No.  But he may drop because he did not play in a pro-style type offense in Oregon.  Because of Mariota’s lack of experience playing in the pro-style offense it is believed that he may take some time to develop into a starting NFL quarterback.

The question for teams then becomes this – Do you waste your 1st round pick on a guy who will not start for you in the coming year?  Some teams may say that you don’t.  Is there 16 of those teams in front of the Chargers?  We will find that out on draft day.

But for arguments sake, lets say it does happen…

With the 17th pick the San Diego Chargers select Marcus Mariota!!!!!

If that indeed does happen I think many of us may feel a little sick.  Why?  Because the Chargers just spent their 1st round pick on a guy who won’t start next year when they have needs on the D-line and at running back.  As you kick those feeling around in your head and gut you may realize this is exactly why he might fall to the Chargers at number 17.

How does that affect the rest of our draft.  Well, if with the first 3 picks you were thinking DT, RB and OG then one of those has to go.  Probably the guard.  But wait it gets worse.  The Chargers are taking Ajayi in the second round, so that means our D-line talent just got down graded from 1st round talent to 3rd round talent.

Ugh…

So how does the draft shake out with our first four picks?

1. Marcus Maroita

2. Jay Ajayi

3. Grady Jarrett

4. Mitch Morse

The Mariota Effect… it will be bad.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he does not fall to us.
