As the draft scouting process continued this week at the Senior Bowl, the Chargers interviewed and spent extra time with Yale running back Tyler Varga. Listed at 5’11” and 220 lbs, he is a powerful runner with great instincts. After being listed as a fullback, one thing became very clear during his Senior Bowl performance. This kid can not only block, but he can run! He was making cuts and breaking defenders down consistently. He showed quality hands out of the backfield and surprising speed in the open field. For never playing fullback prior to the Senior Bowl, he looked very comfortable in pass protection and picking up blitzes.

In 2014 he rushed for 1423 yards and 22 touchdowns, while adding another 4 touchdowns receiving. He managed 2,985 in just 24 games. His 6.1 yards per carry average will attest to just how effective his combination of power and cuts is. The Chargers are still looking for the downhill power back who will complement Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver. Varga is currently estimated to be drafted anywhere between rounds 4-7.
