As part of his state of the franchise conference, Chargers GM Tom Telesco displayed confidence in the play-making ability of linebacker Melvin Ingram and the raw but developing talent of rookie Jerry Attaochu. Dwight Freeney is a 2015 free agent and debating whether or not to hang up the cleats. Jarret Johnson is 34 years old and carries a 2015 cap hit of $7.5 million, which puts a question mark next to his chances of a return. That could force the franchise that ranked 29th in the league in total sacks to examine the free agent market for an edge rusher.
OLB Sam Acho would be a perfect fit in the Chargers 3-4 system and is an unrestricted free agent in 2015. Drafted in the 4th round in 2011, Acho flashed brilliance in his first two seasons as a pro. During that span he compiled 11 sacks, 6 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions, and 5 pass deflections. In 2013, he suffered a season ending injury just three games in. For much of 2014 he has been battling Matt Shaugnessy for snaps, and finished the season with 1 sack, 1 interception, 4 run stuffs, and 3 pass deflections. He is a monster off the edge and has an innate ability to strip the ball.
He could bring the tenacity and energy to the pass rush that the Chargers have been missing since the departure of “Lights Out” Shawne Merriman.
