Chargers @ Chiefs: Open Thread

Somehow, a lot of us fans had a feeling that the road to the playoffs would go through Kansas City this weekend. The Chiefs need a miracle, but the Chargers path is more black & white. Win, and you’re in.

When the Chargers lost to the Chiefs at home earlier this season, they pretty much made sure this would be a battle for the last wild card spot. As expected, a 9-7 record will not get the Chargers into the post-season. They will have to pull out a win today, on the road, if they want to keep playing football in January.

They will be without Ryan Mathews, Keenan Allen, and fielding a patchwork offensive line. However, they will also have Philip Rivers, who played possibly the best game of his career, in a thrilling comeback win over the 49ers last week. The defense managed to force turnovers in that game, and they will need to do the same today. The Chiefs have a top-ranked passing defense, and are barely giving up 200 yards per game through the air. They have a pretty bad run defense, so we need to get the ground game going. They also have one of the league’s best running backs, and will be looking to give him the ball as much as they can, with back-up QB Chase Daniel under center. Stopping Charles will be a must, and they need to control the clock, unlike their first match-up.

No matter what happens today, the Chargers have managed to control their own destiny heading into this game. After so much talk about playing the best division in football this year, they beat 3 out of four of those teams, and BARELY lost to the Cardinals. They have kept afloat in a crowded AFC playoff race, and will be fighting for their chance to go to the dance.

Here’s to a win today, so we can keep doing these open threads. I really enjoy them, and its great reading everyone’s comments throughout the game. If this is your first one, then this should be a doozy! Please post your thoughts in the comments section below, and let’s root for our team to clinch a playoff berth!
