Chiefs QB Alex Smith out Sunday vs Chargers

According to multiple reports, the Chiefs have announced that quarterback Alex Smith has been ruled out Sunday against the Chargers with a lacerated spleen. Chase Daniel will start in his place.
Daniel will make his second career start, his last coming in Week 17 of 2013..against San Diego. The Chargers were fighting for their playoff lives in last year’s season finale, while the Chiefs had already clinched a spot. A host of players that were on the field were backups including Daniel, who finished the game throwing for 200 yards and a touchdown. Even so, the Chiefs were seconds away from sending the Chargers packing until Ryan Succop missed a 41-yard field goal. The Chargers won that game in overtime.
Both the Chargers and Chiefs are fighting for the last wild card spot. A fresh reminder: a win for the Chargers gets them in the tournament. In order for the Chiefs to make the playoffs, they need a win plus losses from Baltimore and Houston. From what we witnessed last year, the Chargers shouldn’t take a Daniel-led Chiefs team lightly.
