Chargers Defense Will Be Fine Without Donald Butler

San Diego Chargers LB Donald Butler will be heading to the IR list today after suffering a dislocated elbow in the game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday. The Chargers still should be fine on the defensive side of the ball with his absence. He has not made the impact that we were expecting from him on the field when he was re-signed in the offseason. It might be better for the defense to give his playing time to some of the other linebackers on the roster anyway.

Manti Te’o has played well in his return to the field from injury. Andrew Gachkar has stepped up this season and has been taking playing time away from Butler already. Kavell Conner has been an adequate sub in the middle of the defense and is a run thumper. The defense should be fine without Butler on the field. His play has been under a lot of criticism when he was playing. We have to wonder what the plan for him is in the future.

John Pagano will rotate the guys in the middle of the defense with Butler out. This will end a disappointing season for Donald Butler and the linebacker will not be able to contribute to the defense when the team makes it into the playoffs. He will finish his season with 73 tackles and a sack.

We will keep our eyes on the injury report on some key offensive players this week. The team will need Ryan Mathews on the field and the team will need to know the status of Keenan Allen in the game as well. The Chargers could use all the help on offense that we can get. Philip Rivers went from a possible MVP candidate to a quarterback that can’t get the team to the end zone. Something has to change on this team on offense.
