San Diego Chargers punter Mike Scifres will have surgery today on his broken clavicle. Scifres was injured on Sunday when his punt was blocked early in the game against the Patriots. His leg was hit on the play and he landed awkwardly on his shoulder. He was taken off on a cart with his shoulder wrapped up.

More from LA Chargers News

Nick Novak was the emergency replacement in the game for him during the game. He did a decent job at punting the ball, but he will not be the solution at punter. The team will likely sign another punter onto the squad while Scifres out.

Scifres could be available for the playoffs if the team were to leave him on the 53-man roster. His roster spot would take up a valuable roster spot on a team that has been beat up with injuries. I could see the team releasing one of their running backs in order to make room for a punter on the roster… Ronnie Brown not the other Brown. Where is the Adrian Phillips release when we need it?

Scifres has been a valuable weapon on special teams for the team giving the team some good field position to work with. He will be missed on the field and the team will need to fill his role with someone.

Scifres was our team’s punter, but he also is the field goal holder for the team as well. Someone new will be filling that role on the roster as well. I am sure they can find someone to take that spot. Eric Weddle and more fake field goals? Hopefully they are able to learn how to get that role done quickly since Nick Novak is one of the best kickers in the league and that role of the holder role is underestimated… ask Tony Romo.
