I have liked what I have seen from Branden Oliver, but the more we see him on the field, the more I think he is a 3rd down specialist for this team. He has the ability to take the ball between the tackles and make things happen and he also can make plays in the open field in the passing game, but I can’t see him taking the rock over 20+ times every game. He can do it at times, but that cannot be his role consistently.

Getting Ryan Mathews to take care of those duties should take some weight off of his shoulders and he will be able to provide that spark on some 3rd down catches and runs.

I can even see Oliver getting some opportunities to take the ball near the goal line and short yardage situations. It wouldn’t be ideal, but I trust his ability to pick up a short amount of yards in little space and believe that he can hold onto the football with a number of people tugging at it.
