Inside Chargers Training Camp: Practice recap day 4

By Jake Hefner

The action on the field was just as hot as the weather at Chargers Park on Sunday afternoon.

WR Battle Keenan Allen and Malcolm Floyd put on a show, continuing to make plays in practice. One of under the radar surprises of camp has been Wide Receiver Dontrelle Inman. The former CFL receiver has been very consistant, and had a good day of practice seeing many passes come his way. Vincent Brown did not practice Sunday and remaines sidelined in Mondays practice while recovering from a calf injury.

The outside linebacker core was on full display on Sunday, LB Tourek Williams is having a spectacular camp, fellow linebackers Jarrett Johnson and Dwight Freeney have praised about the progress he has made. Rookie second round pick Jerry Attouchu got a learning experience battling Left Tackle King Dunlap for a majority of practice. “During this part of the season you still have to be ready to play 3 quarters.”- Linebacker Thomas Keiser on keeping himself in gameday shape during preseason.

The defensive line has tremendous competition amongst its young players. Corey Liuget and Kendall Reyes had constant pressure up the middle during drills. However undrafted free agent Tenny Palepoi showed some flash in pass rush drills, Palepoi is deceptively fast, very strong and was in the backfield early an often. Nose tackle  Kwame Geathers is having a good camp, while he struggled a bit in defensive line drills, Geathers conditioning  improved and looks much healthier than a year ago. fifth round rookie selection Ryan Carrethers showed what he lacks in size, he makes up for in speed. Showing quickness off the line and good power, Carrethers drew praise from his teammates and coaches.

Perhaps the biggest highlight of practice came from Saftey Eric Weddle, picking off not one but two interceptions. After spending much of Saturday covering WR Malcolm Floyd, CB Brandon flowers covered Keenan Allen throughout practice and played him very physical. A new face to The Chargers secondary unit was thrown into the mix in a position that fans may not have expected. “He actually asked me as soon as we picked him on the first day. ‘Can I go back to special teams?’ So we’ll see what happens down the road. -Coach Mike McCoy on First round draft pick,Jason Verrett fielding punts during Sundays practice.
