The San Diego Chargers plan to release Derek Cox. The Chargers are making their cuts off of the roster now and a couple of players have already seen the ax. Derek Cox is the latest of these moves. Le’Ron McClain was relesaed earlier in the morning.

Chargers have informed CB Derek Cox they plan to release him, per source. Cox spent one season in San Diego. Was due $4.25M base salary.

Cox did not perform with the Charger last season and Tom Telesco was not afraid to cut bait with him. Telesco didn’t let his ego stand in the way and just cut ties with his mistake. Good move by Telesco.

Cox had the whole season to turn things around, but he was getting burnt like toast all dang day on the field. He was benched a couple of times during the season and finally lost the starting job to Richard Marshall at the end of the year.

As soon as Cox was sent to the bench, the defense turned some things around. Cox wasn’t the main reason for the turnaround, but he was part of it.

The Chargers now free up a roster spot for someone who can contribute to this defense.

Derek Cox's contract in 2013 came with $5.2M signing bonus. His release saves $4.25M in cash but creates $3.9M in dead money.
