Tom Telesco re-signed Donald Butler to a good deal and kept him on the roster for 3 years with the possibility of 7 years. He was creative in the contract and it sends out a message to the fans and to the team. Telesco will work to keep his own players and he will be creative with contracts.

Butler wanted to be a top paid middle linebacker in the league, but his performance up to this point wasn’t up to that level. With the contract that was set up, he has the opportunity to get paid like a big time linebacker, but he has to earn it. He has to show that he can do it for the first 3 years of the deal and if he is able to prove it can get done, then he will get that money.

For upcoming free agents on the roster, Tom Telesco showed that he will pay the money to keep his own guys. We don’t have A.J. Smith around anymore to let players like Darren Sproles and Vincent Jackson walk away without anything to show for it.

If only Tom Telesco were around for the team before those guys became free agents. If only we were able to keep some of our own guys on this roster.

We won’t be able to keep everyone on the team, but Tom Telesco will do what he can in order to make it happen. Keep our own players!

For the young players on the roster, they can have that incentive. Corey Liuget and Ryan Mathews will be up for new deals soon. At some point we are going to have to pay Keenan Allen and D.J. Fluker. When their time is up, we can have some confidence that we will get something done.
