The San Diego Chargers re-signed defensive coordinator John Pagano today, per Adam Schefter. Pagano’s contract wrapped up at the end of the year and the team has decided to bring him back. He had a tough season with all the injuries to his lineup, but the team should be looking to restock the defensive side of the roster and there will be much higher expectations next season. There was some interest from Ken Whisenhunt and the Tennessee Titans, but Pagano ultimately decided to stick around with the Chargers.
With Pagano brought back, the team will likely stay in the 3-4 defensive scheme that they have been running for a number of years. The defense needs to add some depth all across the roster.
Pagano was applauded by head coach Mike McCoy for the job that he has done this year and the players really wanted him back. He finished off the season strong after Melvin Ingram returned to the lineup, but he will likely be getting an even more critical eye in the coming season. This will be his 3rd season as the defensive coordinator and improvements will be expected.
