The San Diego Chargers were in need of a tight end after the injury to John Phillips. Phillips hurt his knee in Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders and will be out for the remainder of the season. With Phillips out, the Chargers only had Antonio Gates and Ladarius Green on the roster at the tight end position. So the Chargers made a move for a tight end.

I like how the Chargers plucked a tight end off of the Chiefs roster. Just the team that we will be playing this weekend in a game that could get us into the playoffs.

Byrne is a tight end out of Wisconsin that has played some with the Houston Texans. He was on the Chiefs practice squad this season and should know their playbook fairly well. He will get an opportunity to play with Phillips out. Green and Gates are known more for their skills in the passing game and Phillips was the main tight end used for blocking in the running game. Byrne could be used in that role for the Chargers now.
