The Houston Texans have released 3rd round draft pick DE/LB Sam Montgomery today for violating some team rules. Montgomery was a potential first round draft pick going into the draft, but slid down to the 3rd round due to various reasons. He was one of the players that the San Diego  Chargers brought in for a pre-draft visit and seems to be a player that the team should have some interest in.

We could use depth at any position on the defensive side of the football. Montgomery was brought in by the Texans in the 3rd round and they wanted him to play outside linebacker for their defense. His skills didn’t translate well for Wade Phillips and their defense and he was moved back over to defensive end, but he barely saw the field.

He could be used on the Chargers defense as a pass rushing linebacker or a defensive end. We have had a ton of our linebackers drop this season and we could use more depth at the position. Currently, we have Jarret Johnson, Larry English, Tourek Williams and Thomas Keiser as the outside linebackers on the roster. Montgomery could help provide some pressure off of the edge and would bring more speed and depth onto the roster.

There are some questions about his motivation, but that is something that the Chargers would have to evaluate. I think he would be a player worth looking into.

Here is a look at some of his highlights from college:
