I don’t understand why there are so many people down on this team. People look at the preseason and see that we got worked. Did we really? Do you want to watch the 49ers game all over again? Who started that game for us? Were there any starters in the game for us? ANY?!

Remember how we drove down the field against the Seattle Seahawks in the first game of the preseason and locked down the Seahawks offense in their first 2 drives? The Chicago Bears did put a number on us and we found a few pieces on the roster that did not belong because of it. Against the Arizona Cardinals, we moved the ball well and put up points on the board. We looked good. Our starters can compete in this league.

Just look at the starters for the Chargers. We know the depth looked terrible, but look at the first team. On defense, we have Corey Liuget, Donald Butler, Dwight Freeney, Eric Weddle and some solid pieces around all of them. On offense we have Philip Rivers, a running back with something to prove in Ryan Mathews, Antonio Gates and a decent group of receivers.

The depth on this roster is a work in progress and will be worked on during the whole season. With some good health and better play at quarterback, we will be competing for a spot in the playoffs. We won’t have all those 2nd and 3rd team players on the field all at the same time like the preseason. We have playmakers on our roster that will make those other guys better.

Plus, the AFC is wide open this year. The top teams are not that strong and any team can work their way into the wildcard spot. We will be in this race. I won’t sit back and believe that this team is 7-9 at best. There is talent on this roster. There is a new atmosphere on this team. We can be back in that tournament. I won’t claim us to be a Super Bowl team, but our first team should be able to compete with everyone else.
