The Chargers didn’t take the NFL up on its offer to lessen the local television blackout rule —- games that aren’t sold out 72 hours in advance aren’t televised in the home team’s market. The rule even applies to preseason games, so Saturday’s glorified scrimmage between the Chargers and Cowboys at Qualcomm Stadium was only available to those who bought tickets.

Shareece Wright’s electrifying 73-yard interception return set up Jackie Battle’s go-ahead, 2-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, and backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst threw two touchdown passes in the Chargers’ 28-20 win on Saturday night.

SAN DIEGO —- Chargers coach Norv Turner said time and again that players make the most progress between the first preseason game and the second.

The rookie left tackle, undrafted out of UCLA, started again Saturday night against the Dallas Cowboys and wasn’t the only reason the first-team offense was rancid.

This summer, before the Blake High School football team hit the field, one of its assistant coaches was outside, running sprints and drills by his lonesome. When practice ended, he retired to the campus weight room, lifting long after the carpools drove away.
