Chargers backup RB

Jackie Battle

will need to step up big in the coming pre-season games. He was brought on and was the favorite to make the roster as the 3rd running back, but the injury to

Ryan Mathews

shifted some things around.

Battle is a pounder. He will fight in the short yardage situations, but he doesn’t have the speed to bounce runs to the outside. Opposing defenses can stack the middle against him if they sniff out the run and stop him. He doesn’t catch the ball out of the backfield that well either, but he should be able to be used as an extra blocker in the backfield.

In Kansas City, he was a beast on special teams and that could come into play in the roster decision. The edge for the roster spot right now goes to Curtis Brinkley, so Battle needs to make some good things happen these next couple of games. It will be a tight competition between Battle and Brinkley all the way to the end.

Who would you rather have on the roster?
