A San Diego jury has awarded $5.2 million in damages to a woman who filed a malpractice suit against the doctor, David Chao, in 2006. The verdict, delivered late Wednesday in San Diego Superior Court, also found a medical device company, Breg Inc., liable for damages.

SAN DIEGO — Charlie Whitehurst entered the locker room Friday morning and was the center of attention. The Chargers backup quarterback lightened the mood with a joke.

The veteran quarterback and Del Mar resident was making breakfast for his daughter at 10 a.m. Friday morning he got a phone call about the Chargers’ interest in his services. He simply packed up a bag and drove 25 minutes to his new job.

While the San Diego Chargers wait to see if the knee injury suffered by backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst is serious (he doesn’t think it is) the team has covered its bases by contacting other quarterbacks, U-T San Diego reports.

That’s three Pro Bowlers and, in Tolbert, the team’s leading touchdown-maker last season. All moved on and the question is: Will the mediocre Chargers — 8-8 at last sighting — move up?
