Who will lead the Chargers in sacks in 2012? In previous years, we had Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips destroying opposing quarterbacks. Now, we don’t know who is going to step up. Phillips had to battle through injuries last season and questions are popping up about his age. Will he still be the leader of the pack?

Antwan Barnes led the assault last season with 11 sacks, but can we expect that kind of production from him again? He shouldn’t see the field as often with Jarret Johnson here, Larry English healthy and Melvin Ingram brought onto the roster. He still is one of our best pass rushing specialists and will get lots of opportunities to bash in some QBs.

My pet Melvin? Could the rookie Melvin Ingram finish the season as the top dog? He was brought in here to be a force and to get after the quarterback. He won’t be the starter at the beginning of the season, but he could start stealing some snaps is he impresses during games.

Do I dare say Larry English? NEXT…

Cam Thomas? If a d-lineman is leading our team in sacks, then we are doing something terribly wrong or Cam Thomas is doing all kinds of right. The defense is made for those outside pass rushers to get after the quarterback!

If all things are right, Shaun Phillips NEEDS to be leading the charge on the defense! He is been on this defense for a long time and is our biggest threat. If he is not right, then somebody better step up and make some things happen. We need Shaun to be healthy and we need him to be a force.

There will be a solid rotation of pass rushers worked in on defense and it will be a race to be the top guy. Get those sacks and make that secondary look dominant! Who will be leading in sacks in 2012?
