The Chargers have a handful of tight ends on the roster right now. Antonio Gates is the stud at the top of the depth chart. After Gates on the depth chart, we have Randy McMichael, Dante Rosario and rookie Ladarius Green.
There has been talk that the Chargers could keep four tight ends on the roster, but that seems like an awful lot of tight ends. If we did end up keeping just three on the roster, who would be the odd man out?
Gates and Green will be on the roster. Gates is one of the best in the business and we expect some great things from him again this year. Pee Wee Green was drafted to be the future at the position and he has some raw receiving talent that the guys want to develop.
Norval has been raving about the pass catching abilities of Dante Rosario. Rosario has been impressive during OTAs and Chargers fans will remember him for his touchdown catch in the back of the end zone on opening day against us in 2008. The crowd was stunned silent when he came down with that football to win the game for the Panthers. Is there a possibility that he could edge out Randy McMichael for a job? Rosario is younger and brings more athleticism to the roster. He also can help on special teams.
Randy McMichael is a steady vet on the roster and he just signed a 2-year deal with the team. we were looking to get younger at the position in the offseason, but the market for tight ends was thin. He is one of the better blocking tight ends on the team and he had to be used as a blocker more often last season since our offensive line was in shambles.
There will be a competition between Rosario and McMichael to keep a roster spot. It will be possible that we keep both around as insurance for Antonio Gates OR we might just keep one of them. Who would be the odd man out?
