The NFL Network is releasing their Top 100 players of 2012 and there just is not enough Chargers action on that list, so the staff at Bolt Beat got together to create a Top 10 Chargers list based off of their performances from last season.

10) Takeo Spikes

During the 2011 offseason the Chargers made what, at the time, I believed to be two very important free agent acquisitions.  The two players acquired were Takeo Spikes and Bob Sanders.  The former proved my excitement to be validated.  The latter however was a failed experiment and unfortunately left a void at strong safety that had not been filled since the days of Rodney “The Hitman” Harrison.  Let’s hope Stuckey, Bigby, and Taylor all play a role in changing that a.s.a.p.

Spikes not only made a great contribution on the field, he was immediately a factor in the off the field department as well.  Spikes was named a team captain and, in addition to Eric Weddle, was the vocal leader of a unit that was desparately in need of just that.  Although it’s clear that he can be a liability in pass coverage due to his lack of speed, Takeo is a force in the run game and is great at getting to the ball carrier and making the stop.  That being said, Spikes has great hands if the ball is thrown to where he has a chance to make a play on it.  That fact can be backed up by his 19 career interceptions.

This will be Takeo’s 15th season in the NFL.  He has been a team captain on four different NFL teams, including our Chargers.  The man has 1,345 total tackles in his career.

The most daunting stat of Spikes’ career is that the guy has NEVER even played in a playoff game!  It will be an absolute tragedy if he does not have the opportunity to do so.  Rest your heads, though, BoltFans.  Spikes will get the chance to play in at least three this year.
