Out of Northern Illinois, Larry English is one of only two Huskies to be named first team All-MAC three times (2006, 2007, 2008). Set the NIU career records for tackles for loss (63) and quarterback sacks (31.5), forced eight fumbles and recovered four. Ranks fifth all-time in MAC history in quarterback sacks and is tied for eighth in tackles for loss.

English was the Chargers pick number 16 in the 2009 draft. Clay Matthews was drafted by Green Bay 10 picks later.

We all know how that worked out for them.

Ah what could have been.

Since the draft, English has played in just 29 games and made four starts in three seasons. Foot injuries and other surgeries have limited him to 13 games the past two seasons.

The Chargers have a good core of linebackers but they should be better. With the addition of Jarret Johnson, they have gotten better. Don’t forget about Jonas Mouton. After spending his first season on injured reserve, I’m sure he’s chomping at the bit.

Will number 52 be the linebacker we saw in college or will he be yet another casualty?

He still has a chance to prove himself.

For Larry English, ’tis the season.
