I am not sure if this was the wisest team that AJ Smith could have chosen as the model for the franchise. Not RIGHT NOW! Not in the middle of all this BOUNTY scandal. With coaches getting suspended for seasons on end and the whole franchise left with a black eye on the way they handled all of this.
AJ Smith jumped on a conference call yesterday with a bunch of season ticket holders and according to the UT:
By the end, Smith used the 2009 Saints as a path he hopes the Chargers will have walked.
After an 8-8 season, they made defense a priority, swapping coordinators and adding pieces such as safety Darren Sharper. They forced a league-high 39 turnovers, went 13-3 and won a Super Bowl clinched on an interception.
While I understand what he was trying to share with the audience, it was just a poor selection of teams to model behind at this time. The Saints went from 8-8, to the Super Bowl champions after they put more of a priority on defense. They also put a priority on injuring key players to get an advantage in the game. Maybe AJ will be asking Coach John Pagano to put bounties out on Peyton Manning and Dwayne Bowe. Putting a hit out on Darren McFadden. Run DMC gets injured by himself anyway, so maybe we don’t need to go after him.
That is how we will win the AFC West! We have to be like the Saints!
