Chargers Free Agency Shopping List: Anthony Spencer
Is it me... or does it seem like he has a big face? Mark J. Rebilas-US PRESSWIRE
Time to jump in and look at another player that the Chargers could pursue in free agency. Let’s look at Anthony Spencer from the Dallas Cowboys. Here is a little insight from our friend Steven Mullenax over at The Landry Hat:
The feeling from the Cowboys fan base is that Anthony Spencer has been a huge disappointment. Spencer was picked 26th overall in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He was supposed to supply another pass rusher on the opposite side of DeMarcus Ware. But Spencer never fully reached his potential. And the main reason for that was effort. Spencer has admitted to “taking plays off” and not giving 100% effort all the time. The kid is a strong tackler when he wants to be and a decent pass rusher. He did make a couple great plays this year, but those are few and far between. Most fans feel it’s time to part ways with him. Others would like to keep him, but only if it’s on the cheap.
Another player like the BIG LAZY? Can we motivate this guy? With veterans like Takeo Spikes and Shaun Phillips around him, will we be able to get him going in the right direction?
We don’t like to make big splashes in free agency and this could be one of those lower profile moves that AJ likes to make. If we brought Spencer on, he would get the starting spot opposite of SP95 and share some time with Antwan Barnes. Barnes would be brought in during passing downs to get after the quarterbacks. It could be a nice combination at that position.
Spencer would be coming from a defensive system that is very similar to ours. The Cowboys are still working with the Wade Phillips defense and the Chargers are still TRYING to run that defense as well.
This wouldn’t be a signing to jump up and down for, but it could be a solid move. At least he would be better than Travis LaGirl!
