It doesn’t seem like it will take that long for the Chargers to name the replacement for their open defensive coordinator position. Here is the latest tweet from the enabler Acee:

RT @solaroy: Any chance Chargers interview Del Rio/Nolan/Spagnuolo? Or is Pagano done deal?>Pretty much done. They wish done it in ’11 – Kevin Acee

If they wish that they had done this last year, then why didn’t they just make that move then? Why wouldn’t you at least go through the process of interviewing guys that have proven to be a good defensive coordinator in this league? Mike Nolan and Steve Spagnuolo are all available and those options should at least be explored.

John is a favorite of the players in the locker room and that is likely why he will get the promotion. Do the players RULE this locker room? IF they wanted Mike Riley OR Kevin Gilbride to come in and coach this team, would they get their wish?

John has helped tutor Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips to become Pro Bowl caliber players as the Chargers linebackers coach. His older brother, Chuck, is the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens and is respected around the league. Hopefully John can bring a new attitude to the defense and bring an aggressive attacking style.

I am not disappointed in the selection, just wish that they would explore the other options that were available. I am sure that Pagano will say that he will bring a new attitude and an aggressive defense, but everyone else has said that before too. We will have to wait till next season starts in order to see what kind of style he actually brings. At least we know that we will keep running the 3-4 defense.
